Workshop Description:

Participants will develop a nuanced understanding of how various substances impact sexual health and therapeutic outcomes. Through a blend of theoretical insights and practical applications, therapists will acquire skills in assessing, diagnosing, and treating substance use disorders within the context of sex therapy. The course includes instruction on differential diagnosis techniques and considerations of comorbidity, drawing from foundational texts such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to guide clinical decision-making.

Additionally, the course provides a comprehensive introduction to out-of-control sexual behavior (OCSB), defined and explored in depth using criteria from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Therapists will explore effective therapeutic strategies and interventions for managing OCSB, integrating insights from Braun-Harvey and Vigorito’s work on sexual behavior disorders. Practical case studies and simulations will enhance clinical proficiency, preparing therapists to address problematic sexual behaviors while adhering to ethical guidelines set forth by professional organizations such as AASECT. By the conclusion of the course, therapists will be equipped with evidence-based tools and strategies to confidently navigate these complex and interrelated issues in their clinical practice.
